The Bikepacker's Guide to Shelter

Home is where you pitch it.

Your shelter is your primary defense against weather. We review Bikepacking Tents and Ultralight Shelters focusing on packability (short poles are key) and weight.

The Criteria

We value protection and packability:

  • Packed Size: Can it fit between 42cm handlebars?
  • Weight: Is it light enough to justify the comfort?
  • Livability: Can you sit up inside to change clothes?

Our curated lists below cover the essentials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tent vs. Bivy?

Tents offer livability and bug protection but weigh more. Bivvies are lighter and stealthier but can feel claustrophobic and suffer from condensation.

Do I need a footprint?

For ultralight tents with thin floors (15D or 20D nylon), a footprint is recommended to prevent punctures from rocks or thorns.

Single-wall vs. Double-wall?

Single-wall tents are lighter but prone to condensation. Double-wall tents separate you from the wet fly, offering better ventilation and comfort in humid conditions.

Freestanding vs. Non-freestanding?

Freestanding tents are easy to pitch on rocky ground or wooden platforms. Non-freestanding (trekking pole) tents save weight but require good stake-out points.
