The Bikepacker's Guide to Hydration

Water is heavy.

Carrying 4 liters adds 4kg to your bike. We compare water filters and storage solutions on flow rate, clogging behaviour and real-world capacity, so you can carry less by filtering more often.

The Criteria

We value flow rate and versatility:

  • Flow Rate: How long does it take to filter a liter?
  • Compatibility: Does it thread onto standard bottles?
  • Durability: Can the bladder survive a crash?

Our curated lists below cover the essentials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Filter vs. Purifier?

Filters remove bacteria and protozoa (Giardia). Purifiers also remove viruses. In North America/Europe, a filter is usually sufficient.

Squeeze vs. Gravity?

Squeeze filters are lighter and faster for on-the-go drinking. Gravity filters are effortless for filtering large batches at camp.

Bottles vs. Bladder?

Bottles are easier to refill and monitor intake. Bladders carry more volume (2-3L) and allow drinking while riding but can be hard to clean.

How much water capacity do I need?

In temperate climates, 2-3 liters is safe. In arid deserts or remote stretches without resupply, you may need 6-8 liters or more.
