The Bikepacker's Guide to Hygiene

Health is wealth.

Saddle sores and sunburn can end a trip faster than a mechanical. We review Personal Care items for the long haul.

The Criteria

We prioritize effectiveness and size:

  • Concentration: Is the soap concentrated to save weight?
  • Packaging: Is the container leak-proof?
  • Multi-use: Can the balm be used for lips and chafing?

Our curated lists below cover the essentials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chamois Cream?

Essential for multi-day trips to prevent saddle sores. Apply liberally before every ride and reapply if needed.

Leave No Trace?

Pack it in, pack it out. This applies to everything, including toilet paper. Carry a trowel for cat holes.

How do I shower in the wild?

Baby wipes (pack them out!) are the standard 'shower'. Alternatively, a dip in a stream (no soap in the water!) or a dedicated portable shower bag.

First aid essentials?

Antiseptic wipes, ibuprofen, bandages, and blister pads. Don't pack a hospital. Just enough to treat minor issues or stabilize major ones until help arrives.
