Cookie Policy

We don't use cookies
GravelPacker sets no cookies. It also writes nothing to your browser's local storage or session storage. There is no advertising network on this site, no retargeting pixel, and nothing that follows you to other sites.
This is why you have never seen a cookie banner here. Consent banners are required when a site stores or reads information on your device. We don't, so there is nothing to ask you about — and a banner offering you a choice that has already been made in your favour would be theatre.
How to check
Don't take our word for it. Open your browser's developer tools on any page of this site and look under Application → Storage (Chrome) or Storage (Firefox). Cookies, local storage and session storage should all be empty.
Then how do you count visitors?
With Umami, hosted in the European Union, which measures traffic without cookies and without storing anything on your device. It tells us how many people read an article and which links they follow. It cannot tell us who you are, and it cannot recognise you on any other website. Our privacy policy sets out what it records and the basis we rely on.
Two things that can set cookies
Both require you to act first, and neither happens while you are simply reading.
- Playing a video. Guides with a video show a still image, served from this site, not a YouTube player. If you press play, the player loads from youtube-nocookie.com and Google may then set storage on your device under its own policy. Don't press play and nothing is requested from Google at all.
- Following a link to a retailer. Our product links are affiliate links. Once you arrive at Amazon or another shop, that retailer sets its own cookies under its own policy. That happens on their site, not ours, and we receive nothing about you in return — see the affiliate disclosure.
Blocking things anyway
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies and site data from its privacy settings, and blocking ours costs you nothing because there are none to block. The site is built to work without JavaScript for reading, so a strict blocker will not break an article.
