The Bikepacker's Guide to Cooking

Calories equal miles.

Whether you are a gourmet chef or a boil-water-only rider, your Cook Kit needs to be compact. We review stoves that fit inside your mug.

The Criteria

We focus on efficiency and nesting:

  • Boil Time: How fast can it make coffee in the wind?
  • Packabillity: Does the stove and fuel nest inside the pot?
  • Fuel Efficiency: How many days can you get out of one canister?

Our curated lists below cover the essentials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Canister vs. Alcohol Stove?

Canisters are fast, convenient, and work in wind. Alcohol stoves are silent, ultralight, and fuel is available everywhere, but they are slower.

Titanium or Aluminum?

Titanium is lighter and stronger but conducts heat poorly (hot spots). Aluminum cooks more evenly but is heavier and can dent.

What size pot do I need?

For solo trips, 550ml-750ml is perfect for boiling water for a dehydrated meal and coffee. For cooking real food or two people, aim for 1.1L+.

Do I need a wind screen?

Yes. Even a light breeze can double your boil time and waste fuel. Use a piece of folded aluminum foil or a dedicated titanium screen.
