Katadyn BeFree 1L Collapsible Water Filter Bottle Review

The BeFree pairs a 0.1-micron membrane with a collapsible HydraPak flask, and its defining characteristic is flow: it drinks almost like an unfiltered bottle.

The verdict

The one to buy if slow flow is what stops you filtering. Accept a 1,000-litre cartridge life and keep it out of silt, and nothing else drinks this easily.

Flow rate is the whole argument for the BeFree. The 0.1-micron membrane sits in the neck of a 1-litre collapsible flask, and you drink through it directly rather than squeezing into a second container. Owner reports are consistent that it is the fastest of the common lightweight filters, and that this is what makes people actually use it rather than risk untreated water.

The membrane is cleaned by swirling it in water rather than backflushing with a syringe, which is genuinely easier at a streamside. The flask packs flat when empty and weighs almost nothing, so it disappears into a frame bag or a fork bag. At 63g for filter and container together, it is competitive with a bare Sawyer plus a pouch.

Two things pull it back. Rated life is 1,000 litres against Sawyer's 100,000 gallons, so this is a consumable rather than a buy-once item, and replacement cartridges are a recurring cost. It also clogs faster in silty or tannic water than a backflushable filter, and owner reports about degraded flow almost always trace to that.

One habit extends the cartridge life considerably. Letting cloudy water stand for ten minutes before filling, or pouring it through a bandana first, keeps the bulk of the sediment out of the membrane. Most of the reports describing a BeFree slowing down within a season trace back to filtering silty water directly.

What works

  • Fastest flow of the common lightweight filters
  • Cleaned by swirling rather than backflushing
  • 63g including the 1-litre flask
  • Packs flat when empty

What doesn't

  • 1,000-litre cartridge life is a fraction of Sawyer's
  • Clogs quickly in silty or tannic water
  • Flask thread does not fit standard 28mm bottles
