LifeStraw Peak Series Collapsible Squeeze Bottle Filter Review

The Peak Series is LifeStraw moving onto Sawyer's ground: a 0.2-micron squeeze filter with standard threads that works on bottles, inline, or straight from the supplied soft flask.

LifeStraw Peak Series Collapsible Squeeze Bottle Filter — Stream Refill
The verdict

A capable and flexible squeeze filter that does four jobs adequately. It gives up cartridge life to Sawyer and flow rate to Katadyn, and sits between them on both.

The Peak Series filter threads onto standard 28mm bottle necks, which means the same cartridge covers a supplied soft flask, a disposable bottle, an inline bladder setup, or direct sipping as a straw. That flexibility is the strongest reason to choose it, because it lets one purchase cover several ways of drinking without committing to any of them.

The 0.2-micron hollow-fibre membrane covers bacteria, protozoa and microplastics, which is the same practical protection as the Sawyer range despite the slightly larger pore size. Backflushing is done by squeezing clean water back through the cartridge rather than with a separate syringe, and owner reports describe flow recovering well when that is done regularly.

Where it loses ground is the numbers on either side of it. The 2,000-litre rated life is well short of Sawyer's, so it is a consumable rather than a buy-once item. Flow is respectable but does not approach the BeFree, and the soft bottle draws more durability complaints than the filter itself.

The straw mode is more useful on a bike than it first appears. Being able to drink directly from a stream without unpacking a bottle turns a water stop into a thirty-second pause, which on a hot day is the difference between drinking enough and rationing. It also gives a fallback if the soft bottle fails.

What works

  • Standard 28mm thread works with bottles, inline and as a straw
  • Backflushes without a separate syringe
  • Filters microplastics as well as bacteria and protozoa

What doesn't

  • 2,000-litre life is far short of Sawyer's rating
  • Soft bottle attracts more durability complaints than the filter
  • Flow rate sits behind the Katadyn BeFree
