Platypus QuickDraw Microfilter System (1L) Review
The QuickDraw is Platypus answering the BeFree, and its trick is combining a fast membrane with the standard 28mm thread that the BeFree gives up.
The verdictThe most convenient filter here for riders already carrying standard bottles. Pays for it in cartridge life and 30g over a bare Sawyer.
The QuickDraw solves the compatibility problem that the BeFree creates. It flows nearly as fast, but it threads onto standard 28mm bottle necks, so the bottle already in your cage becomes the dirty-water container and nothing proprietary is required. For a rider running normal bottles that removes an entire piece of kit from the list.
Cleaning is a shake with a small amount of water rather than a backflush with a syringe, and it can be done without disassembling anything. Owner reports rate this highly and it is the practical difference between a filter that gets maintained on the trail and one that gets maintained at home. Integrity testing is built in, which is unusual at this price.
It gives up two things. The 1,000-litre rated life matches the BeFree and falls far short of Sawyer's, making it a recurring cost. At 94g it is also roughly 40g heavier than the Sawyer Micro, which matters if the filter is competing for space with food in a frame bag.
The integrity test is worth using rather than ignoring. Blowing back through a wetted cartridge should meet resistance, and air passing freely means the membrane has been compromised, most often by freezing. That is the only practical way to detect the failure that otherwise gives you a filter which looks fine and filters nothing.
