Zefal Z Adventure Cage Review
The Z Adventure is the cage for riders who are not sure yet whether they want cargo or just more water, because it takes either without changing anything.
The verdictThe most flexible cage here and the easiest to justify. Reinforced plastic rather than alloy is the compromise, and for most loads it is not one you will notice.
Flexibility is the argument. The same cage takes a strapped dry bag on a bikepacking trip and a 1.5 litre bottle on a hot day ride, which means the mount earns its place year-round rather than only on tours. For a rider adding fork storage for the first time, that removes the risk of buying something that turns out to be trip-only kit.
Reinforced polypropylene rather than aluminium keeps the weight and price down and flexes slightly under load, which owner reports generally describe as a non-issue at sensible weights. It mounts to standard bottle bosses, so no adapters are needed on any fork with a three-boss arrangement.
The limits are worth stating. Very heavy loads are better on an alloy cage, and forks without bosses need a strap adapter that this cage does not include. The plastic also has less grip than a rubberised alloy cage, so the retaining strap does more of the work.
Zefal quotes a load limit and it is worth respecting rather than treating as conservative marketing. Reports of cages failing almost always involve water plus cargo together, or a rider treating the cage as a rack. Keeping each side under the stated figure and balancing left against right is what keeps a fork setup predictable.
