Blackburn Outpost Elite Cargo Bag Rolltop (6.5L) Review

A cargo cage without a bag is a shelf, and this is the matching bag: 6.5 litres of rolltop that straps down properly instead of bulging past the cage arms.

Blackburn Outpost Elite Cargo Bag Rolltop (6.5L) — Fork Cargo
The verdict

The right bag for a cage you already own. Sized properly, closes properly, and costs more than the generic sets because of both.

Most fork-cargo problems are bag problems rather than cage problems. A dry bag that is too large bulges past the cage arms, which lets the straps work loose and puts the load where your spokes are. Sizing the bag to the cage rather than to what you want to carry is the fix, and 6.5 litres is the volume that suits a standard three-boss cage.

The rolltop closure matters more here than on a seatpack. Fork bags sit directly in the spray thrown off the front wheel, which is the dirtiest water on the bike, and a rolled closure keeps it out where a zip would not. 420D nylon is a sensible weight for something that will be scraped against undergrowth.

It is sold as a bag alone, which is the right decision and also the reason it looks expensive next to the all-in-one sets. Riders who already own cages are buying exactly what they need. Riders who own neither are paying twice.

One detail worth knowing: strapping a rolltop bag works best with the rolled end facing rearward, so airflow tightens the closure rather than working against it. Owner reports that mention bags loosening over a day almost always describe the opposite orientation, which is an easy thing to get wrong on a first fit.

What works

  • Sized to fit a standard cargo cage without bulging
  • Roll-top keeps out front-wheel spray
  • 420D nylon resists scraping

What doesn't

  • Cage sold separately
  • Expensive next to all-in-one cage and bag sets
  • Few owner reports so far
