Topeak VersaCage Adventure Cage Review
The VersaCage ships with clamps that fit tubes from 20 to 60 mm, so it mounts on a fork leg or frame tube that has no bosses. That is its reason to exist.
The verdictThe cage that fits when your fork has no bosses, with a published 3 kg rating. Clamps add weight and fiddle, so check them after the first rides.
Topeak rates the VersaCage at 3 kg and gives the cage as 128 g, the two straps as 44 g and the three VersaMount clamps as 48 g. The clamps fit tubes from 20 to 60 mm, so the cage goes on a bare fork leg, a down tube or a seat tube. Four mounting holes give 64 mm of height adjustment where the frame does have bosses.
The cradle measures 22 x 12 x 7 cm, and Topeak pitches it for dry bags, a sleeping bag or pad, and stuff sacks. On carbon, Topeak advises protective film under the clamp. Check your fork maker's guidance on clamping accessories to a carbon leg before fitting one.
The owner record has the details to watch. A two-star review describes the clamp band creasing the plastic, clamps rotating as they tightened, a fine thread that could cross-thread, and a 10 litre dry bag slipping as the straps loosened. Five-star owners describe a 700 mile trip with 5 litre bags, and one swapped in Voile straps.
Owners on Amazon US gave it 4.5 stars from 163 ratings in October, with about 7 percent at one or two stars. At $37.84 in August it costs more than a bolt-on cage, and the three clamps are what you pay for. Re-check the clamps and straps after the first few rides, and again before a rough descent.
