Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic Review
The Back-Roller Classic is the reference touring pannier, the one most others are compared against for waterproofing, mounting and lifespan.

Ortlieb sells the Back-Roller Classic as a pair of 20 litre bags, each 950 g, in PVC-coated polyester with every seam welded rather than stitched. It rates them IP64 with the roll-top closure rolled three or four times. Ortlieb's own care notes warn that water may enter through the closure if a bag is fully submerged, so it is rain-proof rather than dunk-proof.
The Quick-Lock2.1 mount clamps to rack tubes up to 16 mm with 8, 10 and 12 mm inserts, and the lower hook rotates in 45 degree steps to clear a rack strut. The bags lift off with the carry handle in a second, which matters if they come off every evening. Ortlieb gives a five-year warranty, keeps spare parts for at least ten years after a model ends, and can reweld holes.
The case against it is the price, around $220 for the pair at Ortlieb's US list price. Budget roll-top panniers now copy the shape for a fraction of that, but they rarely match the welded seams, the replaceable hardware or the warranty. If the bags go on at the start of a tour and stay on, a cheaper pair does much of the same job. If you take them off daily or want the last pair you buy, this is the argument for paying more.
