Tubeless sealant handles thorns and small punctures invisibly, and then one day it does not, and a plug tool is the difference between riding home and walking.
The verdictThe single most useful tool in a tubeless rider's kit, and the one most often left at home. Twenty-eight dollars against a walk out.
Sealant seals holes up to roughly three millimetres and nothing beyond that, which covers most punctures and specifically excludes the sidewall cut from a sharp rock that gravel riding produces. When sealant fails it fails visibly, spraying and losing pressure, and at that point the choice is a plug or an inner tube fitted in a tyre now full of wet sealant.
A plug takes about ninety seconds and does not require removing the wheel. The reamer opens the hole enough to accept the plug, the insertion tool pushes it through, and the sealant then seals around it. Riders who have done both will always choose this over fitting a tube by the roadside in the rain.
Blackburn's version is compact enough to live permanently in a frame bag, which matters because a tool you have to remember is a tool you eventually forget. The plugs themselves are consumable and worth checking before a trip rather than discovering the strip is empty.
It does not replace a spare tube. A tear too large to plug still needs one, and the plug tool is the first line rather than the only one, so both belong in the same bag on any trip longer than an afternoon.
