A side sleeper puts their entire body weight through a hip and a shoulder, and on a two-inch pad both bottom out against the ground. That is the actual cause of most bad nights blamed on the tent or the bag, and no amount of R-value fixes it. Four inches gives enough travel that the pressure points stay floating.

The rated 7.2 R-value is generous for the price and takes it comfortably into shoulder season and light winter. Whether that figure is measured to the same standard as Therm-a-Rest's is a fair question, and the honest answer is that budget brands self-report and the tests are not always comparable.

Packed size is the trade. A four-inch pad has roughly twice the material of a two-inch one, and it rolls to a correspondingly larger cylinder. On a bike that competes directly with the quilt for seatpack space, which is why thickness is a comfort decision rather than a free upgrade.

TREKOLOGY already appears on this site's budget lists and the owner reports are consistent about what the money buys: real comfort from the thickness, adequate durability over a season or two, and a valve that works reliably without feeling like the premium brands. That is a fair description of the whole budget-pad category rather than a criticism of this one.

Inflation time is the other thing thickness costs you. Four inches is roughly double the air volume of a standard pad, so budget more pump-sack cycles at the end of a long day, which is precisely when nobody wants to do them.
