The filter lasts for years and the pouch does not, which is the reason this product exists. Seam splits beside the cap are the most reported Sawyer problem in owner reviews, and Sawyer says its pouches are made to burst at about 7 PSI, before squeezing could harm the filter. Sawyer's warranty does not cover the pouches.

Rolling the pouch from the bottom, like a toothpaste tube, rather than crushing it from the middle is what owner reports credit with making them last. Never leaving one packed full and folded helps too. Neither habit is obvious until a pouch has already gone, and a burst pouch is also Sawyer's sign that the filter needs a backflush.

As a purchase this is straightforward. Three pouches were $9.99 when we checked in August, they fit every filter in the Sawyer range on the same 28 mm thread, and they answer the most common complaint about a system that otherwise holds up well. Owners on Amazon US gave the pack 4.5 stars from 3,589 ratings in October.

Filling technique matters more than the pouch itself. A wide, slow-moving stream fills one easily and a shallow trickle does not, which is where a rigid bottle or a scoop earns its place alongside. Riders on routes with poor water access frequently carry a cut-down bottle purely as a scoop for this reason.
