Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System Review

The Mini is the smallest credible way to make questionable water drinkable, and its rated filter life is so far beyond any realistic touring use that it is effectively a buy-once item.

Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System — Stream Refill
The verdict

The lightest filter worth trusting in temperate country. Accept the slow squeeze and never let it freeze, and it will outlast the bike you bought it for.

The 0.1-micron hollow-fibre membrane removes bacteria and protozoa — E. coli, salmonella, giardia, cryptosporidium — which covers essentially every realistic risk from a European or North American stream. It threads onto standard 28mm bottle necks, which means it screws straight onto most disposable water bottles as well as the supplied pouch, and it can be used inline on a hydration bladder or as a straw. At 57g it is genuinely negligible in a frame bag, and the rated 100,000-gallon life means the filter will not be what limits your trips.

The compromises are flow rate and cold. Squeezing water through a Mini is slower and more effortful than through the full-size Sawyer Squeeze, and the difference is obvious once you are filtering four litres at a resupply rather than one. The membrane will also crack if it freezes with water inside, so it has to sleep in your bag on sub-zero nights — a failure that is silent and that you will discover only when you drink. And it does not touch viruses or chemical contamination, so it is the wrong tool for regions where those are the actual risk.

What works

  • 0.1 micron hollow fibre handles bacteria and protozoa
  • 57g and threads onto standard 28mm bottles
  • 100,000-gallon rated life outlasts any touring use

What doesn't

  • Noticeably slower flow than the full-size Squeeze
  • Freezing cracks the membrane silently — must be kept warm
  • No protection against viruses or chemical contamination
