Klymit Static V2 Sleeping Pad Review

The Static V2 is a minimalist legend for one primary reason: the pack size. It rolls down to roughly the size of a 32oz Nalgene bottle, which is almost unheard of for a pad at this price point. The V-chamber design is engineered to limit air movement and heat loss, keeping you centered on the pad throughout the night.

At 460g, it's light enough for any setup. The 75D polyester bottom handles rough ground better than ultralight 20D alternatives, while the 30D top keeps things soft against your skin. This durability and weight balance make it ideal for the rigors of multi-day bikepacking adventures where you can't always guarantee a perfectly manicured campsite.

The main compromise here is insulation. With an R-value of 1.3, this is strictly a 3-season pad. If you're camping in the shoulder seasons or winter, you'll feel the cold coming up through the ground even with a warm sleeping bag. But for summer bikepacking overnighters, it's a nearly perfect balance of comfort, weight, and packability.

The comparison that decides this one is unflattering. The Trekology UL80 on our budget list is 10cm thick against the Static V2's 6.3cm, carries an R-value of 1.6 against 1.3, and costs $45.99 against $74.99. It is 100g heavier. On every axis except weight, the cheaper pad is the better pad.

What the Klymit keeps is packed size and the side-rail geometry — the V-chamber layout genuinely does stop a side sleeper rolling off the edge in a way a flat-baffle pad does not, and at 7.6 x 20.3cm packed it disappears into a half-full frame bag. Both pads share the real limitation: an R-value under 2 is a summer number. Below roughly 7°C ground temperature you are losing heat downwards faster than any bag above can replace it, and no sleeping bag rating compensates for a pad that thin.
